2/5/1858 POTATAU Te Wherowhero becomes the first king in the King Movement
2/5/1958 Kingitanga Established. king Potaatau of Ngati Mahuta becomes first Maori king of Aotearoa.
5/5/1854 Te Ruki Kawiti who was a prominent Maori chieftain died
7/5/1846 Mananui TE HEUHEU TUKINO II died
8/5/1845 British repulsed from Puketutu pa
10/5/1979 Hone Te Kauru Taiapa died in Rotorua Hospital
18/5/1966 KOROKI Te Rata Mahuta Tawhiao Potatau Te Wherowhero, fifth king, died at Ngaruawahia
21/5/1840 Hobson proclaimed sovereignty over all of New Zealand: over the North Island on the basis of cession by the Treaty and the southern islands by right of discovery.
